6. 暮らしの場で食べ物を買うということBuying Food at Markets/Supermarkets

　スウェーデンを出た後、フランス・パリに少し滞在して、現在はドイツに来ています。

　本当は10月はまるまるローマに滞在する予定だったのだけど、ローマ滞在1週間前になって、「あなたの予約メールを見落としていたので、あなたの部屋がない」と連絡が...

　急いで部屋を探すも、直前&観光シーズンのローマの宿代は高すぎる。出発前に1ヶ月分の宿は見つからなかったので、10月は行き当たりばったりでどうにかしよう！と日本を飛び出しました。

　After leaving Sweden, I stayed in Paris for a short time and I am now in Germany.

　 I had actually planned to stay in Rome for the entire month of October, but one week before my stay in Rome, I received a call saying "I missed your reservation email and we don't have a room for you"...

　 Soon after that, I did my best to find a room, but the accommodation fee in Rome was too expensive because of the best tourism season. I couldn't find a place to stay for a month before my departure, so I left Japan with flexible schedule. In other words, I had no plan at that time.

　なぜフランスに行ってみたかと言えば、フランスと言えばmarché（マルシェ、市場）の食べ物というイメージがあったから。実際、火曜日〜日曜日はパリの各所に市場が立ち並ぶ。（月曜日はお休み）早いところで朝7時から始まって、昼過ぎごろに終わる。

Why I chose France was that France has much fresh food in marché. From Tuesday to Sunday, you can see markets everywhere in Paris. (Closed on Mondays.) The markets start as early as 7:00 a.m. and end around mid-afternoon.

Despite the heave rain, a lot of people gathering at the market

　野菜、肉、魚、チーズ、パン、各国の惣菜...色々な種類の店が出店。

　Vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bread, prepared foods from different countries...

　マルシェに来たからには美味しい食べ物を買って帰りたい！と思いマルシェを散策していると、目の前で香ばしく焼かれているロティサリーチキンに遭遇。ジュージューと焼かれる音と良い匂いの誘惑され、ロティサリーチキン一択。

　''I want to buy some good food at marché.'' I walked around the marché and came across a rotisserie chicken roasting in front of me. The sizzling sound of the chicken and the delicious smell attracted me, so I decided to buy one.

　私「（英語）これを400gください」

店員「？？（フランス語で何かを言う）」

　私「？？」

　...え、あれ。英語が通じない。私はフランス語がわからないので、店員さんが何を言っているかも分からない。私と店員さん、困ったように笑って、立ち尽くしてしまった。

　Me：Can I have this, 400g? (in English)

Shop : ?? ( saying something in French)

Me：??

She seemed not to understand English. I don't understand French, so I don't even know what she was saying. She and I stood there with smiling bitterly.

　この後、他の市場でも買い物をしようとしたけど、思うように英語が通じなかった。

　ふと市場を見渡せば、地元の人々が沢山いて、飛び交う言葉は全てフランス語。そっか、市場っていうのは人々の生活の場所だから、よそものは入り込めないんだ。でも、ヨーロッパだから、英語が少しくらい通じてもいいのに。

　結局、パリの市場で買い物をするのを諦めた。

After that, I tried to shop at other markets, but I couldn't communicate in English as well.

　 Looking around the market, I saw many locals speaking French. "I see, a market is a place where people live, so it's difficult for outsiders to shop here. But, I it would be nice if English could be understood at least a little bit."

　 In the end, I gave up shopping at the market in Paris.

　ドイツの小さな街にやってきた。

　食糧を得るために地元のスーパーに行くと、対面販売のお肉コーナーにハムやソーセージがずらりと並んでいる。そっか。ドイツと言えば、ソーセージとハムだ。

　I came to a small town in Germany.

　At the local supermarket, I found a wide array of hams and sausages in the meat section. Germany is famous for sausage and ham.

　せっかくだからハムを食べたいなと物色をしていると、私の両隣でドイツ語が飛び交っている。フランスと同じでここでも英語が通じなさそう、と思って諦めようとした瞬間、ふと思った。

　As I was looking ham, German was being spoken on both sides of me. "They don't speak English here either, just like in France.'' Just as I was about to give up, I suddenly had a thought.

　市場にしろスーパーにしろ、人々の暮らしに根づく場所で、そこに住む人々の言葉が飛び交うのは当たり前。英語は世界共通語だけど、世界共通語と言われている言語に甘える前に、現地の言葉を知って、その地域の文化に歩み寄ろうとしないといけないのでは。それが、異なる文化を知ろうとする上で必要な姿勢であって、他の文化に敬意を持つということじゃないだろうか。

　Whether it is a market or a supermarket, it is a place that is rooted in people's daily lives, and it is natural that their regional language is spoken. English is the universal language, but before I indulge myself in that universal language, I should try to learn the local language and approach the local culture. That is a necessary attitude in trying to learn about different cultures, and I think it means having respect for other cultures.

　そこでまず、人々のお肉の買い方を観察。一種類のハムを大量に買う人もいれば、数種類のハムを２枚ずつ買う人もいる。重さを指定してもいいし、枚数を指定してもいいようだ。

So first, I observed how people buy meat. Some people buy large quantities of one type of ham, others buy two pieces of different types of ham. They can specify the weight or the number of pieces.

　さて、問題はドイツ語。ドイツ語を何一つ知らないので、「ドイツ　お肉　買い方」で検索し、フレーズを覚えた。（そんな基本的な言葉も知らなかったのかというくらい、何も知らなかった。）

　Now, the problem is German. I knew nothing of German, so I searched for "how to buy meat in Germany" and learned the phrases. (I didn't even know such a basic word.)

　’’Hallo（こんにちは / Hello）’’

　’’Ja, Nein (はい・いいえ / Yes, NO)’’

　”Ich möchte -'' ( - をください / I would like -）’’

　’’Danke（ありがとう / Thank you）’’

　’’Tschüß（バイバイ / Bye）’’

　たったこれだけのフレーズなのに、お肉コーナーの前で30分は練習した。

”Ich möchte drei Scheiben'' ( I would like three slices)

　たどたどしいドイツ語での注文だったけれど、お店の人は優しく笑顔で対応してくれた。店員さんは一体何を喋っているのか分からなかったけれど、雰囲気で''Ja''"Nein"と言ってみた。

I practiced for half an hour in front of the meat section, even though it was a short phrase. The shop staff was kind and smiling as I placed my order in my poor German. I didn't understand what she was saying, but I said ''Ja''"Nein" thinking "she might be saying like this..."

　慣れない言語を使うというのは緊張すること。こんなに緊張したのは久しぶりだった。でも、その地で使われている言語を使ってみようとしたことで、心なしか、相手も受け入れてくれているように感じた。

　Using an unfamiliar language is a nerve-wracking experience. I had not been this nervous in a long time. However, by trying to use the language used in the area, I felt that local people seemed to be accepting me.

頑張ってゲットしたハムの美味しさは格別。

The taste of the ham I worked so hard to get is exceptional.

　振り返ってみると、フランスの市場では英語っていう共通言語に甘えて、フランスの文化への敬意が足りなかったのかもしれない。言語の異なる人たちが互いのことをよく知るためには、英語といった何かしらの共通言語が必要だと思う。でも、ある地域の暮らし・そこにに根ざす文化を覗きたいと思うならば、その地の言語や慣習を知ろうとする姿勢が大切なんだろうな。

　Looking  buck on the experience at the French market, I was spoiled by the common language of English and lacked respect for French culture. I think a common language such as English is necessary for people of different languages to get to know each other better. However, if you want to see the life and culture of a certain region, it is important to be willing to learn the language and customs of that region.

　ちなみに、ハムをドイツ語で買うことにことに成功した私は、ドイツ語で買い物ができると自信をつけ、拙いドイツ語での買い物を楽しんでいます（笑）

　By the way, having succeeded in buying a ham in German, I have gained confidence in shopping in German and enjoy shopping in my poor German.
