30. 冬の夜、エルテンスープを囲んで/In The Cold Winter Night, Eating Erwtensoep Together

オランダ・アーネム中心部のコミュニティ・センター「De Stadskeuken」

オランダ語で「The city kitchen(市民のキッチン）」という意味のこの場所で、今日はヴィーガン料理を提供するイベントを開催するということで、リゼッテさんと私も参加することに。

De Stadskeuken, a community centre in the centre of Arnhem, the Netherlands.

This place, which means 'The city kitchen' (citizen's kitchen) in Dutch, is hosting a vegan cooking event today. So Lisette and I decided to attend.

朝10時、Aenhemの野菜直売所で今日のメンバーのAmélieさんと買い出し。この広場には、毎週水曜日に野菜販売車はがやってくる。週に1回だけだからか、近所の人が次々とやってくる。

At 10am, we went shopping with today's member Amélie at the vegetable market in Aenhem. A vegetable van comes to this square every Wednesday. Since it only comes once a week, but people from the neighborhood come one after another.

「今日は30人分の料理を作るから、その食材を計算してきたの！」

可愛らしい笑顔でそう言うAmélieさんは次々と食材を買っていく。気づくと大きな袋３つがパンパンに膨らんでいた。

''We are cooking for 30 people today, so I've calculated the ingredients!''

Amélie said with a pretty smile and bought ingredients one after another. When she bought everything, she had three big bags full of food.

買い出しを終えて、コミュニティ・センターに集合したのは午後3時。

コミュニティ・センターのキッチンには、既に朝買った食材が並べられていた。

After the shopping, we gathered at the community centre at 3pm.

The kitchen at the community centre was already laid out with food bought in the morning.

今日、料理の総指揮を取るのはJu-jen/ユエンさん。

夏季は屋外で料理を提供する「Outdoor Kitchen」という活動をしていて、冬の今は、ホームレスの方々に無償で食事を提供するボランティアに参加しているそうだ。

Today, Ju-jen was in overall charge of the cooking.

During the summer months, she was a chef of an outdoor cooking activity called Outdoor Kitchen, and now in the winter, she volunteers to serve meals free of charge to homeless people.

今日のメインディッシュはErwtensoep/エルテンスープ。

オランダの冬を代表するこの料理の最大の特徴は、乾燥したえんどう豆。

調理に最低2時間は要するので、まずはえんどう豆を茹でていく。

The main dish was Erwtensoep, Dutch Pea Soup.

The big feature of this typical Dutch winter dish is dried peas.

As it takes at least two hours to cook, the peas are first boiled.

えんどう豆を茹でている間、大量の野菜をみんなで手分けして切っていく。

人参、リーク（ネギの一種）、タマネギ、じゃがいも、セルリアック、ヴィーガンソーセージも切る。

While boiling the peas, everyone cut the large amount of vegetables into smaller pieces.

We cut carrots, leeks, onions, potatoes, celeriac and vegan sausage.

セルリアックはセロリの仲間。

セロリは茎や葉を食べるのに対して、セルリアックはその根茎を食べる。

Celeriac is a member of the celery family.

Celery is eaten for its stalks and leaves, whereas celeriac eats its rhizomes.

人参を切るのも一休み…と思って顔を上げると、目の前に先ほどまではいなかった男性が。

あなたも料理をしにきたの？と訊ねると、「違うんだよ。今日の夜ご飯を食べにきたんだけど、手伝ってって言われたから一緒に切ってるんだ。笑」

I take a break from cutting carrots... and I realized there was a man who wasn't there a moment ago.

'Are you here to cook, too?' I asked.

'No, I'm not here to cook. I came to have dinner tonight, but he asked me to help, so I'm cutting it with him." he replied with laughing.

蓋を開けると、鍋からお豆のいい匂い。

えんどう豆はだいぶ柔らかくなり、煮込んだだけなのにドロッとしている。

Open the lid, nice smell of beans came from the pot.

The peas were much softer and sloppy, even though they were just boiled.

我を忘れて人参を切っていると、知らない間に今日の配膳を担当してくれるという高校生たちとアフガニスタン人の男性がやってきていた。

While I was chopping carrots, a group of high school students who helped us and an Afghan man came over.

アフガニスタンの彼は、1年ほど前にオランダに移住してきたと言う。

The man from Afghanistan moved to the Netherlands about a year ago.

人参を切りながら、私の頭の中は「アフガニスタンの男性にどうやって話しかけよう。」ということでいっぱいだった。アフガニスタンと聞いてイメージするのは政情不安定な地域。もしかしたら彼のオランダ移住にもそんな悲しいことが絡んでいるのだろうか。

As I cut the carrots, my mind was occupied with the question, "How do I talk to an Afghan man?" When I heard the word Afghanistan, I imagined an area of political instability. I wondered if his emigration to the Netherlands might be related to such sadness.

そんなことを頭の中で考えながら、人参を切っていく。

トン。トン。トン。

Thinking about this in my mind, I cut the carrots.

ふと楽しそうな声が聞こえたので目線を上げると、アフガニスタンの彼がみんなとおしゃべりをしながら、楽しそうに話している。ヴィーガンソーセージを試して何かが違うと思ったのか、うーんと首を捻る。それを見てみんなが笑う。

Hearing someone laughing, looked up to see the Afghans' man chatting happily with everyone. He tried a vegan sausage and tilted his head. Everyone laughed at that.

そんな光景を見ていたら、頭の中でこんがらがっていたものが、パッと解けた気がした。

Watching this scene, I felt like something that had been stuck in my head was clear.

あ、そっか。

一緒に料理をして、話して、楽しい時間を過ごせれば、それでいいのか。

相手のことを100％理解する必要はないのかも。

何も難しいことはなくて、ただそれだけでいいんだ。

Ah, I see.

As long as we can cook together, talk and have a good time, I don't need to ask understand the other person 100%. I don't have to ask personal thing.

Nothing too difficult, just that's all that matters.

再び人参に目を戻し、軽やかな気持ちで切っていく。

トントン、トントン、トントン。

I restarted cutting carrots without thinking anything difficult.

私の人参も、他の具材も切り終わったら、鍋に入れて煮込む。

Once my carrots and all the other ingredients had been cut, put them in the pot to simmer.

午後6時、スープが完成した。

外はすっかり真っ暗。コミュニティ・センターにはキャンドルとクリスマスの優しい光が灯る。

At 6 pm, guests started to com.

It was completely dark and the community centre was filled with candles and gentle Christmas lights.

一番最初にやってきたのは、近所に1人で住んでいるという高齢の女性。

毎週、このコミュニティ・センターに夕飯を食べにくるそうだ。

The first guest was an elderly woman who lives alone in the neighborhood.

She comes to the community centre every week for dinner.

初めは1人で座って食べていた彼女。

その隣にリゼッテさんが座り、アメリーさんと私が向かいの席に座る。さらに隣のテーブルの人々も加わる。気づくと1人で食事をとっていた女性の周りにはたくさんの人が集まって、みんなで食卓を囲んでいた。

At first, she was sitting and eating alone.

Lisette sit next to her, Amelie and I also sit in front of her. And then the people at the next table joined us. In a short time, a lot of people gathered around the woman who was eating alone. She was not alone any more.

素朴なえんどう豆のスープが人と人を繋げていく。

ある冬の寒い夜の、心温まる光景だった。

It was a heart-warming moment in one cold winter night that simple pea soup brought people together.
