8. フランスのGwanealさん家族との夕飯と、フランス語が分からない私　Gwaneal's Dinner in France and Me Who Cannot Speak French

フランス北東部のアルザス地方。

ドイツ・スイスと国境を接するこの地方の街並みは、フランスの雰囲気を感じつつも、どこかドイツっぽい雰囲気。

The Alsace region in north-eastern France.

Bordering Germany and Switzerland, the towns in this region have a French feel, but with a somewhat German feel.

駅に到着しボーッと立っていると、マダムが"Bonjour!"と声をかけてくれた。

その後も、小さな子どもからおばあちゃんまで、通りかかる人みんなが、見ず知らずの日本人に挨拶をしてくれるので、ほっこり。

温かく迎えてくれたのは、Gwanaelさんと子どもたち（Marianoくん・Claraちゃん）。

共通言語を持たないという初めての環境に少し（かなり）戸惑いながらも、明るくて親切なGwanaelさんと話していると（何を言っているのか理解はできないけれど）、どうにかなる気がしてきた。

I was a little confused, or maybe a lot, in my first environment of not having a common language. But talking with the cheerful and helpful Gwanael (even though I couldn't understand what he was saying), I felt like everything would be all right.

「今から夕飯を作るけど、準備はいいかい？」

Gwanaelさんの言葉はわからないけれど、包丁で食材を切るジェスチャーから、なんとなく言っていることが伝わる。

'We're cooking dinner now, are you ready?'

I didn't understand what he said, but the gesture of cutting the food with a knife somehow conveys what he was saying.

今日の夕食は、アルザス地方の名物料理、タルト・フランベ。

We were going to cook tarte flambée, a speciality of the Alsace region.

Gwanaelさんが、タルト・フランベに使う生地を２枚用意し、１枚を私の前に置く。

そして、フランス語で説明しながら、お手本を見せてくれる。

Gwanael prepared two sheets of dough for the tarte flambée and placed one in front of me.

He then showed me how to do it, explaining in French.

左のタルト・フランベが子ども用。半分は玉ねぎなし、もう半分は玉ねぎとチーズなし。

10分ほどオーブンで焼けば、タルト・フランベの完成。

食卓では、Gwanaelさんと子どもたちがフランス語で会話をしている。

ケラケラと笑うMarianoくんとClaraちゃんと、子どもたちとの会話を楽しむGwanaelさんを見ているだけで、なんだか私も楽しくなってくる。もちろん、何を言っているかは分からない。分からないのだけど、決して嫌な思いは感じない。なんとなくそこにいるだけで、心地よかった。なんでだろう。

At the dining table, Gwanael and the children were talking in French.

Of course, I didn't understand what they were saying.But just looking at Mariano and Clara who were laughing and giggling, and Gwanael who was enjoying the conversation with the children, made me feel happy too.As I said, I didn't understand what they were saying at all, but I never felt bad about it.Just being there somehow made me feel comfortable. I wonder why.
