9. フランスのGwanaelさん一家の夕飯の風景/Dinner Time With Gwanael And His Kids

フランスのGwanaelさん・Marianoくん・Claraちゃん一家と、フランス語が話せない私の夕飯作り。

Dinner Time with Gwanael, Mariano and Clara in France, and me who cannot speak French.

DAY２

フットボールの練習を終えた Claraちゃんと、お迎えに行ったGwanaelさんが帰ってきたのは21時。「今日は夜遅いから、簡単にご飯を作るね。」Google翻訳で伝えてくれた。

Clara and Gwanael came home from football practice at 21:00.

His Google Translate told me "It's late tonight, so I'll make a simple dinner."

忙しい時や夜遅い時は、簡単にパパッと用意できるご飯が一番。

粉末のスープ。お湯で溶かせば完成する優れもの。

When you are busy or late at night, a quick and easy meal is the best.

夕飯を食べながら、Gwanaelさんはフランス語で色々なことを話してくれる。

Google翻訳を使わずに話すことが結構あるのだけど、この時、表情やジェスチャーから感情は伝わるけれど、話の内容は分からない。

During dinner, Gwanael talked about many things in French.

Quite often he spoke without Google Translate. In this situation, I could tell his emotions from his facial expressions and gestures, but I couldn't understand what he was saying.

でも、話の内容がなんとなく想像できるときもある。

Gwanaelさんが、iPhoneでゲームやSNSを楽しんでいるMarianoくんとClaraちゃんの方を見ながら、何かを話す。その表情・声・ジェスチャーから、困ったような怒ったような雰囲気が伝わる。そんなGwanaelさんの発言に対して、子どもたちが怒ったように抗議する。

...なるほど。多分、Gwanaelさんは子どもたちがiPhoneに夢中になっている状況をよく思っていないみたい。

But sometimes I could sort of imagine what they were talking about.

Gwanael spoke while looking at Mariano and Clara, who were enjoying games and social networking on their iPhones. His facial expressions, voice and gestures conveyed a troubled or angry mood. The children angrily protested against what their father said.

... I see. Maybe Gwanael doesn't think well of the situation that the children are absorbed in their iPhones.

こんな場面もある。

生の玉ねぎをスライスしてかじるGwanaelさんを見て、MarianoくんとClaraちゃんが苦い顔をする。Gwanaelさんに食べるように勧められて私も食べようとすると、MarianoくんとClaraちゃんが「え、本当に食べるの...?」という顔で私を見る。生の玉ねぎを食べてみたら、やっぱり苦くて、思わず顔をしかめると、MarianoくんとClaraちゃんが「だから言ったじゃん！」と言いたげな顔で、笑っていた。

There were another situation like this.

Gwanael sliced and nibbles on a raw onion, Mariano and Clara looked at Gwanael with bitter faces. He encouraged me to eat it, so I tried to eat it, too. Mariano and Clara looked at me with a 'Oh, you're really going to eat it...? I had imagined it, but it was a raw ball.

言葉は分からなくても、言いたいことはすごく伝わった。そんな瞬間がたくさんあった。

Even though I didn't understand the language, I got what I wanted to say very well.

DAY３

「今日の夜ご飯はアルザス地方の有名なパスタにするね！」GwanaelさんがGoogle翻訳を見せながら、冷蔵庫からspaetzleを取り出す。

'I'll have the famous pasta of Alsace for dinner tonight!' Gwanael’s Google Translate told me and Gwanael took spaetzle from the fridge.

夕飯の支度が始まると、子供たちはキッチンにやってくる。アイランドキッチンの片側で料理をするお父さんと、その向かいに座る子どもたち。これが、この家の夕飯の準備の風景。

The children came to the kitchen as dinner preparation started. The father cooked on one side of the island kitchen and the children sit in front of him. This is a daily scene of the dinner.

Marianoくんは15歳、Claraちゃんは14歳と、ちょっぴり難しいお年頃。それでも、こうやって夕飯の時間には必ずキッチンにやってくる。少し面倒くさがりながらも、キッチンの向こう側から話しかけるGwanaelさんに答えている。

そうこうしているうちにパスタもお肉もいい感じになってきたので、夕飯の時間の始まり。今日も食卓では、私の分からないフランス語が聞こえ、私の分かるGoogle翻訳が度々登場する。

Gwanaelさんがアルザス地方の伝統音楽を流してくれた。すると、子供たちがNon!と言いながら、笑ったり嫌がったりし始めた。「子どもたちはこの音楽があんまり好きじゃないんだよね」とGoogle翻訳。どうやら、明るいリズムで耳に残るこの音楽が、子どもたちのツボにハマってしまうらしい。

Gwanael played some traditional music from the Alsace region. Then the children started laughing and saying ''Non!'' ''The children don't like this music very much,' said Google Translate. Apparently, once they heard this music, the children can't seem to get this music out of their ears.

こうやってご飯を食べながら会話をしていると、難しい年頃の子どもたちの表情が和らいでくる。食事前までは口数の少ない2人も、夕飯の準備の時間にキッチンに座って食卓を囲み始めると、少しずつ口を開き始める。食卓が終わる頃には、Gwanaelさんと楽しそうに話し始める。

Conversation over dinner like this softens the expressions on the faces of children at a difficult age. They are not very talkative before the meal, but when they sit down in the kitchen at dinner preparation time and start to sit around the table, they gradually start to open their mouths. By the end of the meal, they start talking happily with Gwanael.

フランス語で話すの内容は分からない。でも、そんな私にもわかったのは、この夕食の時間が家族を繋ぐ大切な時間なのかもしれないということ。そんな光景を前にして、心がほっこりした。

I didn't know what they were talking in French. But I could understand was that this dinner time might be an important time to connect the family. It was heart-warming to see such a scene .
