31. 温かい光が灯る夕食と、ロシア・ウクライナの戦争の影/Warmly Lit Dinner And The Shadow Of Russia-Ukraine War

オランダ・Arnhemから東に進み、国境を超えてドイツへ。Hannoverの北部に位置する小さな町・Schwarmstedt。ブナの木と平原に囲まれた、自然豊かな静かな町の、緑を基調とした優しい雰囲気の家に住むKathlinさん。

From the Netherlands, eastwards and across the border into Germany, the small town of Schwarmstedt is located in the northern part of Hannover. A quie town surrounded by beech trees and plains, there lives Kathlin in a green-toned house.

「今、暖炉に火をつけるね。」

Kathlinさんが薪をくべる。暗い部屋にパチパチという静かな音が響き、部屋がじんわりと温かくなっていく。

''I'm going to light the fireplace now."

She said and put the firewood. A quiet crackling sound echoed in the room, and the room gradually became warmer and warmer.

初めての暖炉に感動して、将来の夢に暖炉のある家を持つことが加わった。

Impressed by the fireplace, having a house with a fireplace is on my bucket list.

「昔から暖炉や小さな灯りが好きなんだけど、今はロシアとウクライナの戦争の影響で、電気代がとても高いの。だから、電気を節約しないと。」戦争前と比べて、今の電気代はおよそ6倍だという。

''I love these little lights and fire place, but now, due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, utility bills are very high.'' Compared to before the war, utility bills are now roughly six times higher.

「今日は、野菜をオーブンで焼くね。」

用意したのは、色とりどりのにんじん、じゃがいも、バターナッツカボチャ。

そしてHokkaido。

''Today we are going to roast some vegetables in the oven!''

The ingredients were colorful carrots, potatoes, butternut squash and Hokkaido.

「北海道？北海道って言った？」思わず聞き返してしまった。

Hokkaido（ドイツ語 でHokkaido Kürbis）はカボチャの名前。ある日本人がこのカボチャを持ち込んだそうなのだが、その方が札幌の近くに住んでいたことから、「Hokkaido」と名付けられたんだとか。

''Hokkaido? Did you say Hokkaido?'' I asked twice.

Hokkaido (In German, Hokkaido Kürbis) is the name of a pumpkin. A Japanese man brought this pumpkin to Germany and named it 'Hokkaido' because he lived near Sapporo, Hokkaido in Japan.

これらの野菜を縦長に切って、潰したニンニク、ハーブ、オリーブオイル、塩胡椒とあえる。そして、オーブンの天板の上に並べたら、あとはじっくり焼いていく。

Cut these vegetables lengthwise and toss with crushed garlic, herbs, olive oil, salt and pepper. Spread them on a baking sheet and put into the oven.

「オーブン料理はシンプルだし、野菜がおいしく食べられるから好きなの！」

''I like oven cooking because it's simple and the vegetables taste great!''

じっくり焼くこと30〜40分が経過した頃。

ハノーファーにバレーボールの試合に行っていた、パートナーのMarkさん、息子のLeifくんが帰ってきた。今日は、KathlinさんとMarkさんの友人も一緒だ。

When vegetables were baked for 30-40 minutes, her husband Mark, her son Leif and a friend of them came back from Hannover. They played volleyball there.

MarkさんとKathlinさんはバレーボールが大好きで、近所の子ども・若者たちのバレーコーチをしている。

Mark and Kathlin love volleyball and are volleyball coaches for children and young people in the neighborhood.

ある日、廃れてしまった町のテニスコートを駐車場にするというニュースを聞き、2人はテニスコートをビーチバレーのコートに変える計画を市長に提案した。市長は喜んで受け入れてくれ、若者と協力してビーチバレーのコートを作ったそうだ。

「上手とか下手とかは関係なくて、楽しくプレーできたらそれでいいと思うんだ。」

One day, they heard the local news that the town's old tennis courts were to be turned into a parking lot. Hearing the news, they proposed a plan to the mayor to convert the tennis court into a beach volleyball court. The mayor accepted their plan, and they worked with the young people to build a beach volleyball court.

'It doesn't matter if you're good or bad. if you're having fun playing, that's all that matters.'

全員揃ったので夕飯の時間。

完野菜のオーブン焼きは、どの野菜もほくほくと甘みがあって美味しい。そしてHokkaidoはというと、ねっとりと甘く、日本のカボチャに近い感じがする。

Everyone came back to home, so now the dinner time.

The oven-roasted vegetables were delicious and had their own sweetness. The Hokkaido pumpkin was almost like a Japanese pumpkin.

ディップソースは２種類。サワークリームと、ブルーチーズ・クリームを混ぜたソース。

Two dipping sauces were sour cream and a blue cheese sauce.

一緒にバレーボールの試合に出ていた男性は、KathlinさんとMarkさんの大切な友人で、6年前にロシアから引っ越してきた。

ロシアとウクライナの戦争が始まってしまった今、ロシアにいる家族の元へ帰りたくても帰ることができない。友人たちとコミュニケーションを取りたくても、ロシア国内にいる友人と自分との間には、物事の見方に対する大きな違いが生まれてしまっている。

元々おとなしい性格だという彼だが、とても切なそうに、悲しそうに話していた。そんな彼を、MarkさんとKathlinさんとLeifが優しく包み込む。

Their volleyball friend moved from Russia six years ago.

Now that the war between Russia and Ukraine has started, he cannot return to his family in Russia even if he wanted to. Although he wants to communicate with his friends, there is a big difference in the way he sees things between himself and his friends in Russia.

He was introduced as a quiet man, but he spoke with a very sad and wistful look on his face. Mark, Kathlin and Leif gently hugged him in their arms.

野菜の甘みでいっぱいのオーブン焼きと、暖炉の温かい炎と、優しい気持ちが、そこにいるみんなを包み込む。文化の違いだとか、国の違いだとか、そんなものは一切関係なかった。

Oven-roasted vegetables filled with sweetness, the warm flames of the fireplace and kindness enveloped everyone there. In that place, it didn't matter at all whether it was cultural differences or national differences.
