26. スウェーデンの穏やかな時の流れと「フィーカ」の時間/’’Fika'’ and Swedish Peaceful Time

12月頭、スウェーデンに上陸。

10月に訪れたAnnaさんが住むストックホルムを通り越し、南へ向かうこと電車で3時間。

Sävsjöという小さな町に住むFredlik/フレドリックさん（フレッドさん）と彼の家族を訪ねた。

In the beginning of December, I landed in Sweden.

Passing through Stockholm, we headed south for three hours by train.

I visited Fredlik (Fred) and his family who live in a small town called Sävsjö.

スウェーデンと言えば、この赤い家

This red house reminds me of Sweden

スラングから冗談まで、日本人のように日本語を喋るフレッドさん。

実は私の大学・学部の卒業生。

日本から遠く離れたスウェーデンでOBに出会えたことが奇跡的に感じられるからか、ヨーロッパの冬の曇り空も気にならない。

Fred speaks Japanese like a Japanese, he can use Japanese slung and he joked in Japanese!

In fact, he is a graduate of my university and faculty.

Perhaps because it feels miraculous to have met him in Sweden, so far away from Japan, I didn't mind the cloudy skies of a European winter.

「お昼にミートボールを作ろう！」

スウェーデンといえば、やっぱりミートボール。

今日は、Fredさんの母・Beatrice/ビアトリスさんと一緒にミートボールを作る予定だ。

''Let's make meatballs for lunch!"

When you think of Sweden, you might think of meatballs.

Today, Fred's mother, Beatrice, and I are going to cook meatballs together.

近所の学校やコミュニティで清掃の仕事をしているビアトリスさん。

この日は朝5時に出勤、11時ごろに帰宅だそう。

それまで少し時間があるので散歩に出かける。

Beatrice works as a cleaner at a neighborhood school and community.

She went to work at 5:00 a.m. and will return home around 11:00 a.m.

We have a little time before then, so we go for a walk.

散歩の途中、落ち葉の山の中に小さな家を発見。

家の横に立っている看板を、フレッドさんが読んでくれる。

「これはサンタさんと妖精の家です。ここにあるポストに手紙を入れたら、サンタさんからプレゼントが届くかもしれません。」

On our walk, we found a small house in a pile of fallen leaves.

Fred read the sign standing next to the house.

''This is the home of Santa and the elves. If you put your letter in the mailbox here, you might receive a present from Santa."

「普段はこの自然に囲まれた道を、幼稚園の子どもたちが手を繋いで歩いているんだよ。」

スウェーデンの学校では自然と触れる時間が多く、子どもたちは森の中でよく遊ぶという。

森で遭難した時の対処法という授業もあるそうで、「遭難した時は、木にしがみついて助けを待ちましょう」「木の枝を2本組み、布をかけて、簡易シェルターを作りましょう」ということを習ったそうだ。

Swedish children spend a lot of time in nature.There is also a lectures on what to do if you are lost in the forest. Kids learn these things; "If you are lost, cling to a tree and wait for help""Make a simple shelter by putting together two tree branches and covering them with a cloth.''

午前11時、Beatrisさんが帰宅。

早速始まったのは料理ではなく、「fika(フィーカ）」というお茶の時間。

チョコレート、キャンディ、チョコケーキ、シナモンロール、デニッシュ…テーブルの上は甘いものでいっぱい。

At 11:00 a.m., Beatris returned home.

What began immediately was not cooking, but a tea time called "fika.''

Chocolates, candies, chocolate cake, cinnamon rolls, Danish... the table was full of sweet things.

「お母さん、いつもより張り切って買ってきたみたいだ...笑」Fredさんが呟く。

''She bought much more things than usual...'' Fred muttered.

スウェーデンの人々にとってフィーカは欠かせないもの。

11時にフィーカ、12時にランチタイム、15時にフィーカというような感じで、1日に2-3回はフィーカをするという。仕事をしていても、忙しくても、必ずフィーカの時間がある。

「フィーカは全てを解決するんだよ。心を落ち着けて、ゆっくりと過ごす。人と対立した時も、仕事で問題に直面した時も、フィーカを取ればその後全てがうまくいくんだ。」

Fika is a necessary time for Swedish people.

Daily schedule of Swedish is like this; Fika at 11:00 a.m., Lunchtime at 12:00 p.m., and Fika at 3:00 p.m. They have fika 2-3 times a day. Even when they are working, even when they are busy, there is always fika time.

''Fika is so important that it solves everything.' he says. ''Calm down and relax. Whenever having a conflict with someone or facing a problem at work, if I take a few moments of fika, then everything will be fine after that."

1時間ほどフィーカをした後、ミートボール作りが始まった。

After an hour of fika, the meatball making began.

ミートボールの肉だね作り。

パン粉、卵、牛乳、牛豚ひき肉、すりおろしたタマネギを混ぜる。

粘り気が出てきたら肉だねを一掴み取り、手のひらの上で転がしながらボール状にする。

Mix bread crumbs, eggs, milk, ground beef and pork, and grated onion.

When the mixture becomes sticky, take a handful of the meatballs and roll them into a ball in the palm of your hand.

バターを落とした天板の上にミートボールを並べて、あとはオーブンに入れて焼く。

「ミートボールはオーブンで焼くのが一番美味しいの！あとは量が多いから、オーブンの方が簡単！」と、オーブンの扉を閉めながらベアトリスさんが言う。

Put the meatballs on a baking sheet with butter and then put them into the oven.

''Meatballs taste best when cooked in the oven! And since there's so many, it's easier in the oven!" Beatrice says as she closes the oven door.

Beatriceさんに教えてもらったようにミートボールを丸めたのに大きくなってしまう。私の食いしん坊の現れか...。

I rounded the meatballs as Beatrice taught me to do, but they are getting bigger.

ミートボールを焼いている間に付け合わせのマッシュポテト用のじゃがいもを茹でる。

While baking the meatballs, boil potatoes for mashed potatoes.

スウェーデンの主食はじゃがいも。スーパーの野菜コーナーの中でも、じゃがいもは広いスペースを占める。じゃがいもをスクープで好きなだけ取って袋に詰めていく。

Potatoes are a staple food in Sweden. Potatoes occupy a large space in the vegetable section of the supermarket. You can take as many potatoes as you want with a scoop and pack them in a bag.

じゃがいもをよく食べる地域はヨーロッパ北部の国々というイメージがあるけれど、原産地は南アメリカの高原地帯。どうやって海を渡ってきたかと言えば、16世紀にインカ帝国へ遠征したスペイン軍により、ヨーロッパに持ち込まれた。当初は観賞用だったじゃがいもが食べられるようになったのは18世紀のドイツ。深刻な飢饉に見舞われる中、フリードリヒ大王によって寒さに強いじゃがいもの栽培が促進された結果、人々は飢えを回避し、じゃがいもは食用として広まった。

Potatoes are often eaten in northern European countries, but they originated in the highlands of South America. They were brought to Europe by the Spanish expedition to the Inca Empire in the 16th century. Originally an ornamental potato, it was not until Germany in the 18th century that it became edible. In the midst of a severe famine, Friedrich the Great promoted the cultivation of cold-tolerant potatoes, which helped people avoid starvation and spread the potato as a food source.

あとはミートボールが焼き上がり、じゃがいもが茹で上がるのを待つだけ。

キッチンからリビングへ移動し、テレビを見てお喋りをしながら、のんびり過ごす。

And, wait for the meatballs and the potatoes done.

We move from the kitchen to the living room, watching TV and chatting.

テレビではスキー競技の中継。スウェーデンの人の冬の楽しみの一つだ。

Skiing competitions are broadcast on TV. It's one of the winter pleasures of Swedish people.

1時間後、じゃがいもは串を刺すと崩れるほどの柔らかさに茹で上がった。これをマッシュポテトにしていく。マッシュポテトの粗さは家庭によって差があり、じゃがいもを粗めに潰して食感を残す人もいれば、粒がなくなるまで完全に潰す人もいるそう。マッシュポテトのこだわりが人一倍強いBeatriceさんは、とことん滑らかにする派。入念にハンドミキサーで潰しながら、バターと牛乳を入れる。

An hour later, the potatoes are boiled to such a tenderness that they fall apart when skewered. The potatoes are made into mashed potatoes. The coarseness of the mashed potatoes varies from house to house, some mash the potatoes coarsely and leave the texture intact, while others mash them completely until there are no grains left. Beatrice, who is more particular about mashed potatoes than anyone else, is making them as smooth as possible. While carefully mashing the potatoes with a hand mixer, she adds butter and milk.

オーブンからミートボールの焼けた良い匂いがしてきたのは午後3時。そのタイミングで、仕事を終えた父・Tjegon/シェーゴさんと、Fredさんの兄・Johan/ヨーハンさんが帰ってきた。午後3時に帰宅って早い気もするけど、スウェーデンでは金曜日は早めに仕事が終わるのが一般的。

It is 3:00 p.m. when I smelled the good smell of baked meatballs coming from the oven. At that time, Fred's father Tjegon and Fred's brother Johan came home after work.

It sounds early to be home at 3 p.m., but it is common in Sweden for work to end early on Fridays.

台所にミートボール・マッシュポテト・ソースの大皿が並べられ、各自が好きな量を器によそっていく。ビュッフェ形式ってなんだかワクワク、ウキウキしてしまう。

A platter of meatballs, mashed potatoes, and sauce are laid out on the kitchen table, and everyone take the amount they want. Such buffet style is very exciting and exciting.

Fredさんとヨーハンさんは実は双子。2人から両隣から話しかけられると少し混乱する笑

Fred and Johan are actually twins, which is a little confusing when they talk to me from both sides!

ミートボールに添えるのはgräddsåsというクリームソースと、リンゴンベリーという赤い実のジャム。バターが染み込んで肉汁たっぷりのミートボールと、濃厚なクリームソース、リンゴンベリーの酸味の相性は最高。

The meatballs are served with cream sauce called "gräddsås'' and lingonberry jam. The meatballs are well baked with butter flavor. The cream sauce and the acidity of the lingonberries are a perfect match.

ミートボールを食べ終えたフレッドさんとシェーゴさんが立ち上がる。向かった先は台所で、2人で食後の片付けを始めていた。北欧では男女関係なく家のことをするって言ってたけど、この光景がまさにそうなのかな。

Fred and stand up after finishing their meatballs. They were headed for the kitchen, where the two of them had started cleaning up after the meal. I've heard it said that in Scandinavia, men and women do housework regardless of gender, and I guess this scene is exactly what I'm talking about.
