34. フィンランドのクリスマス、大切な人と囲む食卓/Christmas In Finland, A Table With Loved Ones

ヨーロッパの人々にとって、クリスマスは家族で過ごす大切な時間。

クリスマスはどの店も営業しておらず、街も静まり返るそうだ。

For Europeans, Christmas is an important event to spend with family. It is said that no shops are open on Christmas Day and the city become quiet.

12/24・25も旅を続ける私は、本物の「クリぼっち」を覚悟していた。笑

クリスマスのヨーロッパの雰囲気を体感するか〜と思っていた。

As I planned to travel on 24th and 25th December, I was prepared for a being alone on Christmas day. Therefore, I just thought of experience the atmosphere of European Christmas.

そんな覚悟を決めていたところに、トゥルクに住むSannaさんのご家族のクリスマスに招待していただけることに！嬉し涙がぽろぽろ。

Just as I was getting ready to do that, Sanna, who lives in Turku, invited me to her family's Christmas! Tears of joy were rolling down my face. ・

クリスマスを1週間後に控えたトゥルク。

街には厳かなイルミネーションが点灯し、人々はプレゼントの準備を始める。そこには、日本の「クリスマスがやってくるぞ！！」という熱狂的な雰囲気やロマンチックなムードはない。トゥルクの街と人々は、クリスマスを静かに心待ちにしているようだった。

One week before Christmas.

The city was solemnly illuminated and people started preparing presents. There wasn't any frenzied atmosphere or romantic mood. The city of Turku and its people seemed to be quietly looking forward to Christmas.

12/18、ひらひらと舞う雪は、街中を温かい銀白色に塗り替えた。

「今年もホワイトクリスマスだね！」みんながそう喜んでいた。

On 18th December, flurries of snow painted the city a warm silver-white.

'White Christmas for this year!' everyone was so happy.

ところが、12/20ごろから天気が一変し、雪から雨に。

泥で真っ黒に様変わりした街に、みんながっかり。

However, the weather changed drastically around 20th December, from snow to rain.

Everyone was disappointed to see the town turned black with mud.

ちょっぴり残念。そんな気持ちで迎えた12/24。

朝9時、窓の外を見てみると、清々しい青空の下に銀世界が広がっていた。

見事な晴れ空に、やっぱりクリスマスは特別な日なんだと確信せずにはいられなかった。

The time passed with a bit disappointment, Christmas eve was coming.

When I looked out the window at 9am, I saw a silver world under a clear blue sky.

This miracle convinced me that Christmas is a special day after all.

クリスマスの街・トゥルクでは、12/24の正午に、広場で「クリスマス平和宣言」が唱えるのが伝統だ。この宣言によって、トゥルクの街は本格的にクリスマスを迎える。広場に足を運ぶ人もいれば、テレビ中継を見る人もいる。

In the Christmas city Turku, it is traditional to recite the Declaration of Christmas Peace in the square at noon on 24 December. With this declaration, Christmas time starts in Turku. Some people visit the square, others watch the televised broadcast.

クリスマスの午後は多くの人が墓地を訪れ、亡くなった人のためにキャンドルを灯す。

During the Christmas period, people visit cemeteries and light candles in memory of those who have died.

夕方には、教会で行われるクリスマス・ミサに参列し、祈り、歌う。

In the evening, people attend Christmas Mass in the church, pray and sing.

教会を出るときには、すっかり日も暮れて真っ暗になっていた。

温かい家に戻ってみんなが手に取ったのは、Glögi/グロッギと呼ばれるホットワイン。ヨーロッパのクリスマスには欠かせないホットワインは、スパイス、ドライフルーツ、ナッツが入っていて、体を温めてくれる。

When we left the church, the sun has completely set and it was alreadt dark.

Back to the warm house, everyone picked up a hot wine called Glögi. Hot wine, an essential part of the European Christmas season, contains spices, dried fruits and nuts to warm you up.

体が温まり、空腹を感じてきたタイミングで、食事の用意もできた。20人もの家族が集まるクリスマスとあって、とても豪華だ。見たこともないようなご馳走に、自分の胃袋が老化していることをすっかり忘れて、食べ過ぎてしまった。

Just when we were getting warm and feeling hungry, the meal was ready. The Christmas Day feast was a grand affair, with as many as 20 family members gathered together. I ate so much that I forgot that my stomach was ageing.

奥で切っているのは、フィンランドのクリスマスのメインディッシュ・ハム！

That's a Finnish Christmas main dish, ham, being cut in the back!

サーモン、サーモン、サーモン！

手前：茹で卵、玉ねぎ、細かく切ったニシンの燻製の上にカレー味のマヨネーズ

奥：Saaristolaisleipäというライ麦のパン

Front: curry-flavoured mayonnaise on boiled eggs, onions and finely chopped smoked herring.

Back: rye bread called Saaristolaisleipä.

laatikko。グラタンとマッシュポテトの中間みたいな料理。じゃがいもやにんじんを使う。

laatikko. a dish somewhere between gratin and mashed potatoes. Potatoes and carrots are used.

チーズやバターなどなど。

Cheese, butter and more.

食べて、おしゃべりして、食べて、おしゃべりして。

あちこちで楽しそうな声が響きわたる。

Eat, chat, eat, chat.

Here and there, happy voices echo through the air.

もちろんデザートもたくさん!

Of course, lots of cakes and cookies!!

3時間ほど経った頃、クリスマスの一大イベントの時間。

クリスマスツリーの下にある大量のプレゼントを、一人一人に手渡ししていく。

プレゼントを受け取って開封するときの表情は、大人も子どもも関係なく、みんなウキウキして無邪気なものだった。

After about four hours, everyone in the family started handing out the presents under the Christmas tree. They called out each name and handed them out. A pile of presents was formed in front of each person.

プレゼントを開けて盛り上がった後も、夜が更けるまでおしゃべりは続いていた。家族とのクリスマスの一瞬一瞬が大切なものだということが、声・表情・その場の温かさ、全てから伝わってきた。

After the excitement of opening the presents, the chatting continued until late into the night. The cozy atmosphere, the voices and theexpressions on the faces, all conveyed how they cherish the every moment of Christmas with the family.

ヨーロッパの人々にとってのクリスマスは、家族が集まる大切な時間だった。

みんなで美味しい食事を食べながら、お喋りを、一緒にいる時間を楽しむ。

たったそれだけのことだけど、ささやかな幸せに満ちた光景だった。

I could tell that Christmas is literally an important time for European family gatherings.

Enjoying a good meal, chatting and spending time together.

That's all, but it was a small, warm scene from my point of view.

ヨーロッパのクリスマスと、日本のお正月は似ているなと思った。

それらは家族で過ごす大切な時間だ。

I thought that Christmas in Europe and New Year's in Japan are similar.

They are important times to spend with family.

逆に、ヨーロッパのお正月と、日本のクリスマスも似ている気がする。

どちらも、大切な友人や恋人と過ごす人が多い。

Conversely, I feel that the European New Year and the Japanese Christmas are also similar.

In both cases, people spend time with their loved ones or friends.

ヨーロッパと日本でそれぞれの行事の捉え方は違うけど、どちらも「大切な人と過ごしたい」時間。

The way Europeans and Japanese see each event is different, but both are times when you want to spend time with someone special.

「大切な誰かと過ごしたい時間」っていうのは、どの地域にも存在する。それはいろいろな行事やイベントかもしれないし、なんてことはない、ただの1日かもしれない。

The time you want to spend with someone special exists in all regions.

It could be various events, or it could be a simple, ordinary day.

面白いなと思うのは、そういう時間には「食」が関わっているということ。これまで沢山の食卓を訪れて、その食卓を一緒に囲んで、「誰かと一緒に食卓を囲む」ということが、大切な人との時間をより幸せでかけがえのないものにするんだということを肌身で感じてきた。

What is interesting for me is that in many cases, such time is related to food. Having visited many people and dining together, I found that 'sitting around the table with someone' makes the time you spend with your loved ones happier and more irreplaceable.

まだ上手く言葉にできないけれど、食って、ただ食べるだけのものではない。

食を介して、人と人が、人と世界が、繋がっていく。 一見すると無縁なもの同士の間にでさえ、繋がりが生まれていく。

I still can't put it into words properly, but food is not just about eating.

Through food, people are connected to each other and to the world.

Even connections are created between seemingly unrelated things.

私たちの生活に欠かすことのできない食。

日常生活で当たり前すぎて気づかないだけで、とても大きな力を秘めているんだと思う。 Food is an indispensable part of our lives.

It’s too ordinary thing that we take it granted, but I believe it has great power.
